Family Biographer records people telling their life stories. That is intimate material, and we treat it that way. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect and what we do with it.
What we collect
- Account details — your name, email address, and a password (stored only in encrypted, hashed form).
- Voice recordings — the storyteller's answers during interview sessions, recorded so they can be preserved and transcribed.
- Transcripts and summaries — text created from those recordings, used to write the biography and choose the next question.
- Basic details about the storyteller — a name and any background you choose to provide.
How we use it
- To conduct the interviews, preserve the recordings, and produce the biography — that is the product.
- To operate accounts, gifts, and customer support.
We never use your recordings for advertising, and we never make them public. We use them to produce your family's biography and to improve how our interviewer asks questions. Beyond that, recordings may be used to build other things from the archive — a film, a documentary, a voice that can read a story aloud — and may be licensed to other companies, including companies building speech and language technology. Your family may also license their own recordings themselves. None of that happens unless the storyteller agrees to it. They are asked plainly, before the first recording, and declining changes nothing about the service they receive.
Who else touches the data
We use a small number of service providers to run Family Biographer: cloud hosting for storage and delivery, a speech-to-text provider to transcribe recordings, and an AI provider to help choose interview questions and draft summaries. They process the data to provide the service to us and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
Where it lives and how long
Recordings, transcripts, and account data are stored on servers in the United States. We keep them for as long as your account is active, because preserving these stories is the point of the service. You can ask us to delete some or all of it at any time.
Your choices
- The storyteller can skip any question, end any session, and is always told they are being recorded.
- Email us to access, export, or permanently delete your recordings, transcripts, or account.
Children
Family Biographer is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top.
